Deadline is a radio play by John Fletcher. It was first broadcast on BBC Radio on 16 October 1997[1].

Set in a remote Chinese village. For centuries, the dead have been buried and their spirits worshipped by their descendants. Now there's a new provincial governor who says that in future all bodies will be cremated. This leads to an outbreak of mass suicides among the elderly.

A louche, dandified gossip columnist from Shanghai is sent to cover the story.

Based on a true story.

A recording is available at the British Library Sound Archive.

Directed by Gordon House
